Default Plastic? Now U See it Now U Don't!

Hi Everyone,
It's been a long winter and I thought I would get started on this project long ago. Yesterday I made the commitment to change my plastic Carrera to routed.
A lot of time and some money went into the original layout and I am very happy with that. But after building a smaller routed track last winter and enjoying all the benefits of it. I found I don't use the plastic at all.
So keeping the layout as is with landscaping as is too. I have a bunch of plastic to post on buy sell trade after I make a count of pieces.
Here are a couple of pics of before (most of you have seen before). I will keep posting my progress along the way. Thanks for looking. And thanks to all who contributed to giving me the routed track bug. My wife says, I needed that, like a hole in the head!!! She is always thing about money, money, money. But you guys know we have to look beyond that and press forward, until we complete our mission.

I like the way you are able to leave the scenery in place. Keep the pics comming. I picked up 4 sheets of MDF over the week end and am going to do some thing like Gordo Bonds track. It will be my first atempt at elevation and scenery. LOL I only had the first routed track running for a little over a year I think.

This is going to be one to watch, can't wait to see the progress. I'm glad to hear you were able to leave the scenery intact, I've always liked the way it looked and now that you are going routed, I'm sure it's going to be even better.

Good luck!

Thanks Guys,
Too bad I didn't do a better job on the table. I could have just routed that. But I will go with the 1/2 in mdf. I am going to try having all the lanes hit the apex on most of the turns. So that will leave plenty of room on the road to try something like Lou is doing. But you will need to show me that trick Lou. ( time for some pay back lol )
Tomorrow On the way home from work, I will pick up the MDF. So pics will be forthcoming.
I can't wait to get started!!!
Frank

This is going to be an interesting build. Adapting wood to space once occupied by plastic.

Can't wait to follow along.

Well, I'm off to a rip roaring start here. I have made a pattern of the track using printer paper brought home from my wifes work (this is about the only assistance I will get from her on the project). I cut out the first section from 1/2 in MDF and started routing. Make no mistake about it, unless you go by the name of LUFF, you are going to make mistakes. So I had to stop for the night. I will get some bondo to fix the mistakes today. It's going to be easyer fix them with Luffs strip still in place.

Nice start Frank. I'm glad you were able to keep the scenery in place.
I know what you mean about keeping Luffs strip in place, The routing will come back to you.
Are you going to use braid or tape?

Looking good Frank, I like the squeeze. Have fun with the Bondo, personally I am really starting to hate the stuff!

I am sure that the MASTER makes misteaks as well. He has made SO MANY tracks he has to have made misteaks!

The key here is that he never shows them!

But showing misteaks and how you fix them helps to show that Wood tracks are not the Mythical things that only GODS can make...

Templates. Good Idea!

Mistakes are part of building a track, that's why I like to work alone. I'm very good at getting spilled beer out of the slot...maybe I should get cordless tools

When pushing the router, the guide has to be on the left...repeat that every time you switch the router on

Thanks oldslotracer. I am doing that now and it's going much smoother. If it turns out half as good as your Targa Burnaby, I will be happy. With about 400 feet of slots to rout, thats a great tip. Thanks again!!!

Lou and Karl, thanks for kind words. I bought a gallon of bodo today. I hope I don't need it all!!!!

DrDiff, that's the last misteak I'm going to post (I THINK) As for the templates. I used to work on rather large boats. We made patterns for everything. It take the guess work out of the equation.

Well, actually I thought I would be further along by now. But work got in the way. Also I under estimated the sheets of MDF. Lou, you work at Home Depot, will you bring a couple more sheets home for me? Oh Yha, I forgot you are in N.J. and I'm not. Besides, it won't fit on the new HOG. LOL
Anyway, I'm off to get more right now so I can finish it up. Here's what I have so far.
I think the one squeeze will be plenty, so the rest of the routering should go pretty fast using Luf's strip and router guide plate.
I read up on installing the braid with the two way tape, and they do say to use a polyurethane coat first, so thats the way I will go.

I'm sure it is more work than starting from scratch. Great work!
